About

Read October was initiated in 2020 to raise awareness about dyslexia within Ontario communities and promote the availability of dyslexia-friendly books in libraries. Read October encourages all community members to support their local public libraries. Funds from the 2020-2024 Read October campaign donations have helped provide training for library staff, grants for decodable books, and information sessions for parents and caregivers.

Impact

The International Dyslexia Association, through Read October, partners with public libraries to bring awareness to the early signs of dyslexia and provides resources to families to support and advocate for their children. We provide training for library staff, grants for decodable books, and information sessions for parents and caregivers.

We are all very pleased with our growing collection. The school kids visit every two weeks and these decodable books circulate along with all the others, with several kids getting “hooked” on a series. It is wonderful to see their enthusiasm.

I’m glad public libraries are starting to build a solid collection for beginning and struggling readers. I am so glad the library is recognizing that they play an important role in the domain of literacy for all and the science of reading. Thank you for making decodable books accessible.

Staff were happy to finally have a decodable collection to offer the public. There has been an increase in homeschool families in our area and a higher demand for literacy materials, including decodable books.
