Ideas to promote Read October in your library

Create a dedicated “Read October” display: Feature decodable books, information about dyslexia, and materials explaining the importance of decodable texts. Include brochures, flyers, and QR codes that link to donation pages.

Promote dyslexia awareness: Use library bulletin boards or digital screens to display facts about dyslexia, personal stories, and quotes from famous individuals with dyslexia.

Host special storytime sessions: Feature story books by authors with dyslexia, and invite children to reflect on the story and share their thoughts about perseverance, learning challenges, and having a growth mindset.

Launch a “Read October” challenge: Encourage children and families to read a certain number of books together or a set number of hours during the month.

Social media promotion: Use your library’s channels to share dyslexia facts, personal stories, and updates from IDA Ontario’s social media platforms during the Read October campaign. Encourage followers to donate, repost, and use hashtags like #ReadOctober and #DyslexiaAwareness.

Partner with local schools: Collaborate with nearby schools to promote Read October activities and encourage students to visit the library, participate in reading events, and learn more about dyslexia.

Guided tours: Offer special library tours that focus on the decodable books section, explaining the importance of these books and encouraging visitors to support the campaign.

Host a dyslexia awareness event: Invite an IDA Ontario Board Member to give a presentation at your library to share valuable information about dyslexia, answer questions, and provide practical resources for parents.
